Letters of Recommendation
Before requesting a letter of recommendation in Naviance, ask your recommender if they are willing to write a letter for you. Be sure to give at least two weeks notice, but the more notice the better. Provide the recommender with a list of your activities, jobs, volunteer work, etc. This will help the recommender write the best letter possible. After the recommender has agreed, enter the information into Naviance.

Testing
Registering for the test can take about half an hour so plan ahead. If you know which colleges you are applying to and are sure you want them to receive your scores at the same time you do, be sure to request that your test scores be sent to those colleges when you register - this will help you avoid fees for sending the scores later. Be sure to check with Mrs. Garber or your Counselor to see if you qualify for a fee waiver. Important: Even if your college does not require test scores for admission, they may use test scores to determine your eligibility for scholarships.
FAFSA
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the start of the financial aid process at any college or university. The FAFSA is completed by providing tax/income information.
Scholarships
Most scholarships are posted starting in December and January with a deadline or March or April. Local scholarships (SHS and REFI) are the best place to start. Remember that searching and applying for scholarships is work. Scholarships are given for many reasons (academics, financial need, interests, experiences, etc.), there are many scholarships available, and there is no one-size-fits-all list of those to apply for. Avoid scams, be careful which scholarship search engines you use or join. Check with the colleges you are applying to for institutional scholarships. Important: Even if your college does not require SAT or ACT scores for admission, they may use test scores to determine your eligibility for scholarships.
